Lauren Canonico

LCSW Clinical Social Work Supervisor

Feeling at odds with the clinical style you've developed? Struggling with "not feeling yourself" and as if you're stuck responding to your patients' struggles in the same old ways? Pigeon holed into "evidence based" approaches because that's how you learned how to write treatment plans? I can help you find an authentic, engaged way to work with your patients that is reflective of both who you are and the therapist you'd like to be.

I offer relationally driven supervision, both face to face and virtually, to social workers and professional counselors of varying disciplines. I work especially well with newer clinicians interested in developing their personal "voice" as a therapist and most enjoy working with issues of transference and countertransference. I provide workshops and trainings, limited clinical consultation, ongoing individual supervision and group supervision. My own practice focuses around body, sex, trauma and LGBTQIA+ affirmative psychotherapy, with special skill and interest in working with eating disorders and disordered eating from a Health at Every Size, harm reduction approach and treating those recovering from trauma and EDs in marginalized bodies (larger bodies, queer, gender expansive and transfer folks). I also enjoy couples, relationship therapy for poly folks, and family therapies.

While I am primarily oriented toward Relational and Interpersonal psychotherapy and psychoanalytic psychotherapy from my studies at the Stephen Mitchell Center for Relational Studies in Manhattan, I also have training in CBT/REBT, DBT, Trauma Focused therapies, group therapy and crisis management. In my 15+ year career, I have been employed in many different areas of mental health and social work practice, including elementary, middle and high schools in NYC, medical social work (HIV testing/diagnosis, medical education, supportive counseling, assessment and discharge planning) and most prominently in outpatient mental health, in both non profit and private settings. I spent several years supervising staff, interns and programming as the assistant director of a well established mental health clinic, and currently am an adjunct faculty member at Fordham University's Graduate School of Social Service in addition to running a full time private group psychotherapy practice near Union Square.
